July 9th we headed for Colorado and stopped at the Colorado National Monument on our way to Leadville which is an old mining town that sits above 11000 ft in the Rocky Mountains. Here is a photo of the view from the top of narrow winding road we climbed in the coach and one of the two tunnels we had to pass through. The next day we took a day off and tried to acclimate ourselves to the altitude. July 11th we took a day trip to Aspen which took us past Twin Lakes, and Independence Pass which is very near an old abandoned mining camp which is now a historical archeological site. Here's a shot of the ski runs on the hills above the town and a great fountain we found in Aspen. On July 12th we left Leadville and stopped in Breckenridge on our way to Golden. This is another ski town similar to Aspen. Here we see quite a few people trying to beat the heat in a small river that runs through town, the ski runs above this beautiful Rocky Mountain town and the Riverwalk Center where many performances take place. We had trouble finding a place to stay in Golden so we headed for Loveland instead. We found a great campground there along the Big Thompson River. We spent the next week and a half in the Loveland area working on a new version of my software programs and Dayadevi's art. While in Loveland we saw quite a lot of beautiful bronze sculptures mostly in the Benson sculpture gardens. On Friday the 22nd we took the coach to a Cummins dealer north of Denver and spent some time exploring Denver. I was particularly impressed by the many brick and stone buildings like this one. Then we returned to Loveland for the weekend and went to the Rocky Mountain National Park on Saturday. One of the most interesting things I learned was that nearly one third of this park is the most accessible region of glaciers and tundra anywhere in the world. It was a beautiful drive and we saw lots of Elk including this buck. On Monday we drove to Seibert, CO and spent a few days. While we were there we discovered this Prayer Garden. |
