On Aug. 17th we drove to Columbus and met my sister and niece at the original Wendys. I remember eating there way back in 1972. They have an extensive little museum there showing the history of Wendys The next morning we met my sister again at the Wendys and then Dayadevi took my niece to a big Tole painting convention that was taking place in Columbus. My sister and I drove around exploring the German Village section of town, where they have many interesting old buildings and cobblestone streets. Then we drove around the downtown area and I photographed some of the buildings there. We also checked out this replica of the Santa Maria . We had lunch at this great Marketplace in the Italian influenced Short North. This tuba player on the steps was a welcoming sight. We found many little shops and different kinds of food to eat. After lunch we explored some more of the Short North. They have several murals in the area including this train, and interesting renditions of Grant Wood's Next drove down to Lancaster to check out a couple of RV Parks. On the way we stopped in Canal Winchester where I lived for a few years on the second floor above these downtown businesses. After deciding on the Lakeview Park, I drove back to Hilliard to get the coach while the women went shopping in Reynoldsburg. We all met back at the campground for a good dinner. On Friday we all went to the first US artist trading card show where Dayadevi had 5 cards on display. These 2.5 by 3.5 pieces of original artwork have been traded in Europe for hundreds of years, but experienced a resurgence in Italy in 1996 and are just now becoming popular in the USA. Dayadevi enjoys the medium partially because of their small size and also the fact she can sell some of her practice pieces of artwork. She is very proud to be in this show which will travel to many US cities in the next couple of years. On Sunday we drove out to the Hocking Hills and had a great time exploring several of the big caves there including Ash Cave, Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave. I love this rock that looks very much like the profile of someone contemplating the beautiful mossy rocks and other plants. Unfortunately, there was little to no water running. In the winter I have seen some magnificent frozen waterfalls here and in the spring and for most of the summer the falls are very beautiful. Still we enjoyed our hikes and the area very much. As you can see the caves are great in height but not particularly deep. On Monday we stayed close to home but on Tuesday we went back up to Columbus and had lunch with my niece at the North market. Here are some of the little shops taken from the second floor where there are some tables and artwork. Also in the short north is this Greek church which I found fascinating. |
