Here's the beautiful St. Joseph Cathedral in Bardstown, which was constructed of locally quarried stone and hand-made bricks in 1819, by both catholics and protestants. It was the first Roman Catholic cathedral built in the US, west of the Allegheny Mountains. On Thursday we checked out the My Old Kentucky Home State Park in Bardstown. These beautiful tombstones sit in a small plot outside the Georgian style mansion. Here are some photos of the carriage house and a small vegetable garden in the middle of vast lawns and shrubs. Then we drove to a place called Buffalo Crossing about an hour away. We had heard there had been a white buffalo calf born here recently. While Dayadevi waited for the calf and its mother to come closer, I walked around the expansive grounds and saw many animals including baby camels, an odd looking turkey, goats, miniature horses, emus, recently shorn alpacas, yaks, pigs and donkeys, and these Watusi cattle. It was particularly fascinating to watch these long horned animals being fed. I was able to reach out and touch their horns as they ate. There was also a herd of buffalo of course, including this very large bull. Here's a shot of the large pond on the property that attracts many water fowl. When I returned to where Dayadevi was waiting the calf and her mother both got up in anticipation of their immanent feeding. This cute little pure white female calf, which was born on June 3rd, had an official Native American naming ceremony where she was named Medicine Heart. Her mother is called Spirit Mother and her grandfather was Chief Joe who weighed 1749 lbs and was the biggest and most expensive 2 year old buffalo ever sold at the Denver Stock show. Unfortunately Chief Joe was struck by lightning on 9/11/2003 and died 13 days later. He was a very special bull as is his granddaughter. |
